Alabama: Mobile, part 2

There is another treat in downtown Mobile!  The Cathedral – Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is gorgeous!

Check out the stained glass!

We felt the need to get outside for some fresh air, so we drove to the Five Rivers Delta Center.  The 5 rivers that flow into Mobile Bay are the Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee and Blakeley.

This Center is at the confluence of these rivers and it includes an exhibit hall, gift shop, walking and picnic areas and more.  And it is FREE!  While at the exhibit hall, one of the docents had a live opossum out for people to look at more closely.

While at the Center, we saw this sculpture of an oyster.

It is just one of many that are part of the Mobile Oyster Trail.  Just like Houston’s Cow Parade and other cities’ public art, local artists have painted these oyster sculptures to represent the Mobile area, its history and culture.  I wish we had more time because “hunting” for these sculptures around Mobile would provide an entertaining exploration of the city!  Maybe on our next trip!

Mobile Museum of Art

This museum has a wonderful permanent collection as well as beautiful sculpture on the grounds.  The focus of the Mobile Museum of Art appears to be American Art as showcased in these exhibits:

American Ceramics
American Glass & Crystal

The exhibition: Passion for Collecting: The Schoenknecht – Paul Collection showcases the passion of 2 collectors whose goal was to collect representative ceramic pieces from every commercial producer in America from the late 19th century to the 1950’s.

The Museum does include works other than American.  In their Asian collection I was wowed by these pieces created by Key-Sook Geum.  She is a professor emerita of textile arts and fashion design at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea.

While we were there, these special exhibitions captivated us.

An Art Historian Collects: The David E. Brauer Collection (Houston, TX):

I fell in love with this etching on aquatint Japon paper by Salvador Dalí, entitled Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha – Le Legacy

This exhibition was fun!

Next month I will continue with our Mobile discoveries.  I certainly did not expect to find so many treasures along our Gulf Coast!  In addition to some old Southern Charm and a sweet treat, I will share some photos of beautiful Bellingrath Gardens!
