Alabama: Mobile, part 3

Historic Oakleigh House

To experience some of that old Southern charm, we visited the Historic Oakleigh House and were lucky to have a private tour!  This 1833 historic house features a collection of over 1000 artifacts representing life in Mobile between 1830-1900.

We are not foodies, but we do like sweets!  Our Airbnb host recommended Cammie’s Old Dutch Ice Cream Shoppe and this was worth the trip!  Terrific ice cream at great prices!

We enjoy traveling during the fall season; however, it is typically not the best time to experience gardens.  Our trip to Bellingrath Gardens and Home was a triumph!  We visited the 15-room Bellingrath home:

The inside is lovely as well:

The Bellingraths had quite a collection of silver.  Look at this silver chest that holds a sterling silver service for 12 in a custom fitted interior!  The pattern is “King Edward” issued in 1901 to honor Edward VII.

There is also an extensive collection of porcelain objects.  This is one that caught my eye:

Speaking of porcelain, next door to the house is an enclosed building that houses the Delchamps Gallery of Boehm Porcelain.  Here are 3 favorites:

Magnolia with Monarch

Mearns’ Quail

The Gardens feature beautiful pathways, an Asian-American Garden, a lake and conservatory:

We had beautiful weather and the Rose Garden was in bloom!  We often miss seeing roses when we visit gardens in the springtime.

I hope you are not tired of Mobile yet; we are certainly not!  In fact, we enjoyed our Fall trip so much that we decided to return in the Spring of 2021.  We especially wanted to see the spring blooms in Bellingrath Gardens.  Join me next month when we return!
