Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington D.C.

Philadelphia:

We acted like the typical tourist in Philadelphia!  We visited the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the Ben Franklin Museum and the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia.  And, of course, we had to eat Philly Cheesesteaks at the Bourse.

Lancaster County:  The Amish Country

After hitting the sidewalks of the city, we decided to retreat to the countryside for a few days.  We stayed in an Airbnb basement apartment of an Amish farmhouse, a real retreat as there was no television or WiFi.  Our hosts were Mennonite and the sweetest, most gracious hosts ever!  We explored the countryside, pigged-out at a Smorgasbord, and learned to appreciate the Amish way of life.  We definitely want to return to this part of the country!

Delaware:

The only trek we made into Delaware was to visit the Winterthur Museum and Gardens.  The former home of Henry Francis du Pont, Winterthur houses du Pont’s extensive collection of Americana.

Here are a couple of pictures of some very creative displays!

Washington D.C.

We made a short trip to D.C., primarily to visit my cousin.  We had a terrific visit which included an excursion to Lincoln’s Cottage!  Lincoln lived at this Cottage to provide more privacy for his family; however, he actually risked his safety as he often rode to and from the White House alone and unguarded.  The Cottage was hardly a retreat, as people would visit him at the cottage unannounced and he was known to greet them wearing his slippers.

We stayed in Maryland but went into D.C. to see two “new” museums that have opened since our last visit.

National Museum of the American Indian:

National Museum of the African American Culture and History:
