It always amazes me how we can live in a city for so many
years, but we really never enjoy what it has to offer until we move. As my husband and I started to think about our
retirement adventure, we realized there were several things we wanted to do
before leaving Houston. For one, I had
never been to an Astros game! So we went
to a game, and what a game it was! It’s
always fun to see a game where the home team wins AND exciting to the very
end. For those who have not been to a
game at Minute Maid Park, there is a huge model train that runs on 800 feet of
track and blows its whistle when the Astros get a home run:
There are all kinds of fun scoreboard graphics and messages
and beware of the cameras! And there’s a
sing-along to “Take me out to the Ball Game”.
Orbit, the Astros mascot is also a fun diversion:
Another Houston bucket list item that we have just done was
the Ship Channel Cruise from the Port of Houston. This is a FREE cruise! All you have to do is make a reservation online
and show up. The boat is very
comfortable and cool inside, there are speakers inside and outside where you
easily hear the cruise commentary, and they even serve FREE water or a cold
drink on the return trip. Can’t get a
better deal than that! No, it’s not a
cruise with beautiful scenery, glaciers and wildlife – but it is very
interesting to see the industrial side of Houston from the viewpoint of a boat
on the ship channel.
We have also had some time to visit some of the smaller
museums in Houston. But more on that
later…
