Water levels fluctuate and itineraries shift, but nothing stops the magic of a Danube river cruise. Our journey pushes forward, swapping out pavement for the gentle, rhythmic pulse of the river.
Steering through the massive locks along the river is a masterclass in slow travel. The boat glides into a giant concrete chamber,
the gates seal behind,
and the water level rises.
It is mesmerizing to watch the wet stone walls disappear until the forward gates swing open to reveal a brand new stretch of Austrian beauty.
The route winds directly into the heart of the Wachau Valley, a dramatic landscape where steep, terraced vineyards plunge into the water.

Fortified medieval churches rise from tiny waterfront villages, balanced by the crumbling stone skeletons of ancient castles.
The Wachauer Nose is a giant, 13-foot-tall concrete sculpture of a nose sticking out of the ground by the Danube River in St. Lorenz, looking exactly like a buried titan who forgot to pull his face in. Created by the artist group Gelitin in 2014, this massive concrete proboscis features walk-in nostrils large enough for tourists to step inside or for kids to treat like an oversized playground cave.

Over the seasons, nature takes over as real grass and tiny bushes sprout directly from its concrete pores, giving the sculpture a delightfully unkempt botanical mustache. It continuously breathes in the rich scent of the surrounding Wachau Valley's Grüner Veltliner wine and fresh apricots, proving that even abstract art appreciates a good Austrian wine tavern.

Perched majestically on a rocky bluff, the golden-yellow walls of Melk Abbey overlook the water. We stepped out onto the sweeping terraces for a breathtaking panorama of the city of Melk.

Inside, photography is strictly forbidden, keeping the magnificent library shrouded in mystery. Picture a breathtaking, two-story Baroque sanctuary lined with over 100,000 leather-bound volumes and historic hand-written manuscripts.

On the floor sit grand, historic globes, including a fascinating piece of early cartography that depicts California completely detached from the mainland as a massive island—perhaps predicting the future?
The 18th-century designers loved symmetry so much that the topmost shelves feature "pseudo-books"—fake wooden book spines with imaginary titles—just to keep the visual lines perfectly balanced.
Soon we will trade Austria’s rolling vineyards for Germany’s fairytale castles. Stay tuned—our cameras (and waistbands) aren’t ready for what’s next on this floating buffet.
