Madrid: Royal Palace

Although not the residence of the current King and Queen of Spain, the Royal Palace of Madrid is one of Europe's largest palaces.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Upon entering this grand palace we see the Grand staircase which is made from a single marble.

The Grand Staircase

The Palace has more than 1 million square feet of floor space and more than 3,400 rooms!

We saw only a few of the rooms -- what spectacular opulence!

This small room is covered entirely in porcelain, from the ceiling to all wall panels.

The Porcelain Room

Every room has beautiful chandeliers and ceiling murals:

The current Banqueting Hall was previously part of the Queen's apartments. Grand State banquets are held in this room today.

Banqueting Hall

This is the grandest room in the Royal Palace. It's the Throne Room, also called the Hall of Ambassadors or Royal Audience Room.

All of these rooms are so luxurious, yet my favorite room is the Chamber of Charles III. This was the most important area of the King's Apartments after the Throne Room. It features a spectacular Rococo decorative scheme.

After our tour of the Palace we visited the Royal Amory.

The Royal Palace is definitely a must-see and having a guide helped to better understand Spain's history.
