Manchester, New Hampshire

We are still enjoying the fall weather and colors in New Hampshire. Manchester is home to the lovely Currier Museum of Art and two Frank Lloyd Wright houses! We took a tour of these two houses.

ZIMMERMAN HOUSE

Exterior Front

This 1700 square foot home was commissioned in 1949. A single story, two bedroom home with no basement or attic was very unusual in this area in the early 1950's.

This home is a typical Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian architectural style. The exterior is integrated with the landscape.

And the interior contrasts narrow passages with large open spaces that bring the outdoors inside.

The house retains its original furniture including a quartet music stand designed by Wright.

KALIL HOUSE

Exterior Front

The Kalil House is a 1400 square foot house with only one story and two bedrooms. It was designed in 1955 and is one of only seven Usonian Automatics ever constructed. This style was called "automatic" because it was supposed to be easy for the owners to build themselves and would therefore cost less.

The carport frames a view of the mountains beyond. The Kalil's were definitely forward-thinking people. They requested an extra storage space in the carport “to take such delivery services as groceries, during the day when we are not home.”

The narrow entry passageway leads to a great room with a high ceiling and lattice-like walls. The large framed windows allow natural light and views of the surrounding woodland.

The house has all its original built-in furniture and shelving.

There are several wineries in the area. We did have an opportunity to do a tasting at one and really enjoyed some of their local estate wines. 🍷
We are leaving soon for New York City!
