California: San Diego

San Diego:

We love zoos!  We often went to the zoo in Houston, especially in the fall and spring when it’s cool. So, we couldn’t go to San Diego and not visit their renown zoo!  Plus, it was my birthday and what better way to spend it.

We were there first thing in the morning to see the opening.  They released several macaws to start the day.

Here are some shots of animals that we don’t have at the Houston Zoo.

Schmidt's Red-tailed Monkey
Hippos
Mommy & Baby Hippo (under water)
Panda
Polar Bear

Tasmanian Devil
Koala

I really like koalas!

There is so much to see and learn about the USS Midway, that we spent a whole day aboard!

We started with a tour that took us to the bridge where we could get a view of the size of this aircraft carrier.

We walked from one end of the carrier to the other, looking at the different aircraft and learning how they took off and landed.

Seeing the quarters below where the crew worked, played, ate and slept provided a deeper understanding of how important each crew member's role was and how they depended upon one another.

In the park next to the USS Midway, there is a 25-foot-tall sculpture entitled Embracing Peace, by Seward Johnson.  It is a depiction of the famous kiss on V-J Day in New York City in 1945.

As you know, we like to visit unusual places, too.  While in San Diego we saw this beautifully landscaped garden called Harpers Topiary:

I got a kick out of these Boat Houses (the S.S. Moonlight and the S.S. Encinitas) in nearby Encinitas.  These are real houses, in a residential neighborhood (not in a marina)!

Next stop, the City of Angels -- Los Angeles!
